The Vaginal Wart Problem

Of all the wart varieties that afflict individuals, perhaps none are more embarrassing than genital wart. In women, a genital wart is more commonly referred to as a vaginal wart, and is caused by the same virus that causes other wart activity – the human Papilloma virus (HPV). The name is something of a misnomer because a vaginal wart can occur on areas of the body other than the vagina, and in men, the same type of wart is simply called a genital wart. Regardless of what you call it, however, a vaginal wart can be an irritating skin disfigurement afflicting more than a million Americans each and every year.

Technically, a genital wart is a sign of a sexually transmitted disease, HPV. Even though this manifestation of warts is defined as an STD, not every type of wart is sexually transmitted. A vaginal wart, however, does fall into that category, which can serve to increase the shame that is felt by the woman suffering from the condition. Fortunately, a vaginal wart is not dangerous and poses no serious health consequences. The underlying virus, however, can lead to various forms of cervical cancer, as well as cancer of the penis. For that reason alone, it is advisable that any woman who experiences a vaginal wart consult with her doctor to determine the best course of treatment.

And treatment is really the only option available for someone suffering from a vaginal wart, as there is no real cure for the HPV that causes the growths. Treatment can, however, reduce the level of contagion, and provide relief from any itching or discomfort that may accompany the warts. Your physician is likely to prescribe a topical lotion or cream to rub on the affected area, particularly in cases involving visible warts that are continuing to increase in size or are creating an irritation. Where creams prove effective, they are the preferred course of treatment since many of the more invasive treatment options can leave you with vaginal scarring.

These creams can include Podofilox gel, imiquimod cream, or a solution like Wartec that is designed to shrink a vaginal wart until it eventually disappears altogether. These topical treatments often have the added advantage of boosting your body’s own immune system so that it can more easily confront the virus on its own. Burning, bleeding, itching, and occasional dizziness are just a few of the side effects that these medications can cause. There are also various acids and creams that only your doctor can apply, as they can be dangerous if used by untrained individuals.

In cases where the creams and lotions are ineffective at treating your vaginal wart, your doctor may discuss with you the surgical options available for removing the growth. As a general rule, all surgeries carry with them the potential for scarring or other complications, so be sure to discuss your options thoroughly with your attending physician prior to committing to a more invasive procedure. Also, be prepared for additional treatments in the future, as vaginal wart conditions are often recurring problems.

There are many different ways to remove vaginal warts, but I think the best way to remove genital warts permanently (without harsh medial procedures or painful over the counter products) is to follow this guide:
